Mental Maths
Mental Maths helps to develop ‘Number Sense’. This will help your child to calculate in their head and memorise number facts with ease. Practice for a few minutes each night with the activities listed below.
Mental Maths : We are learning to recognise odd and even numbers. Start by counting by ones clapping on the even numbers and whispering the odd numbers up to 30. Now have a go at going up to 50!
Monday :Play ‘Popcorn’: Call out a random number less than 50. When you say an even number squat down, for an odd number jump up and shout ‘Popcorn’.
Tuesday : Use your hundred square and colour all the even numbers blue - 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 , 12, 14, 16……...up to 50. What pattern do you see? What do you notice about every number in the ones place ?
Look at the pattern made by the numbers not coloured. These are the odd numbers. What do you notice about the numbers in the ones place?
Wednesday :House numbers : Ask your family and friends the following question : What is the number of your house ? Sort the numbers into two groups: Live in Odd Numbered House / Live in Even Numbered House.
Thursday: Everyday Odd and Even Numbers : Use everyday objects to discover whether they are odd or even numbers e.g. number of mugs on the shelf, number of chairs around the table… get creative!
